Best viewpoints to visit in Urubici – Santa Catarina, Brazil

Best viewpoints to visit in Urubici - Santa Catarina, Brazil | Aliz’s Wonderland

Urubici is located in the Santa Catarina mountain range (Serra Catarinense), 170 km from Florianópolis. Its area is famous for waterfalls, viewpoints, picturesque panoramas and sunsets. I’m obsessed with sights and sunsets, so Urubici exceeded my expectations with its landscapes. So I collected the best viewpoints to visit in Urubici, Brazil.

Most of the viewpoints wait for you with swings and other Instagrammable places. So if you want THE PHOTO, expect some waiting time. Also, many of them are private parks, so you’ll have to pay an entrance fee, though the view will totally compensate you.

Note: The prices and opening times (July 2022) are also included in the post. Still, it can change anytime, especially the opening time, so check it on their sites to not miss your dreamy panorama.

On the following map (My Maps by Google Maps), you can see the top places to visit in Urubici, including viewpoints, waterfalls and restaurants.

By clicking on the tab next to “Things to do in Urubici – Santa Catarina, Brazil”, you can see the actual points, and it’s also possible to turn off and on layers. Furthermore, you can also save this map (if you have My Maps account) by pressing the star next to the map title.

Top 5 viewpoints to visit in Urubici, Brazil

Morro do Campestre

Morro do Campestre is famous for its natural sandstone formations, located at 1380 m above sea level. The most popular photo spot is the arch, and it’s also possible to go on top of the cliff. We arrived there after 4 pm, and it was a bit busy, but everyone was waiting patiently to take the photos.

You’ll have a view of the Canoas river valley and the surrounding mountains.

It’s recommended to stay for sunset. Unfortunately, we missed this opportunity because it was cloudy. We regretted our decision when we returned to Urubici… The whole sky had an orange glow, so don’t be frightened by a few clouds.

How to get to Morro do Campestre?

Morro do Campestre is situated 8 km from Urubici, on the way to Urupema. There are signs along the way, and after a while, you’ll also notice the natural stone arch on your left.

After leaving the centre of Urubici, the road had terrible quality. Luckily, the road was paved from the property entrance, so it was easier to access the top.

Buy your ticket at the restaurant, then drive to the upper parking place. From there, follow the staircase to the top. You can stop at many places to enjoy the view. They even placed there some Instagrammable frames.

Mirante de Urubici

This viewpoint is located 5 km from the centre of Urubici. It offers a panorama of the whole city with the mountains in the background.

How to get to Mirante de Urubici?

Mirante de Urubici is easily accessible by car. The viewpoint is a small parking area along the road to Avencal waterfall. Though I’d suggest stopping on the way back to Urubici because it’s located on the other side of the road at the sharp curve.

Morro do Parapente

Morro do Parapente provides a stunning panorama of Urubici with mountains in the background. It’s a perfect place to watch the sunset and have a picnic.

The viewpoint waits for you with many infinity swings overlooking Urubici. If you want a swinging Instagram photo, arrive before sunset and expect a waiting time. There were many swings, but there was still a queue… Even after sunset, when the swings are illuminated.

I’m sure this place would be crowded even without the Instagrammable swings, thanks to the panorama and the sunset. The sunset was truly magical. You can also bring a blanket and food to set a picnic place. In addition, there are options for paragliding and horseback riding.

Don’t forget some extra layers! All day was around 20 C°, but after the sun went down, it got cold, so have a jacket.

Pro tip!

If you’re going for sunset, make sure to arrive earlier to peacefully walk around because you can enjoy the view to the other side too. Especially if you’re planning to take a swing photo 😛

Morro da Igreja / Pedra Furada viewpoint

Morro da Igreja is one of the highest points around Urubici, with its 1822 meters. It’s part of Parque Nacional São Joaquim, which was established due to the environmental protection of the Araucaria forests. In addition to ecosystem conservation, the park was created to promote environmental education, research and public visitation.

The panorama was breathtaking from the cliffside. You can see so far, far away. On a brighter day, the ocean is also visible from here. Although, Pedra Furada makes this point so unique. As the name says, Pedra Furada (Hollow Stone in English) is a stone with a hole in the middle. It’s the main symbol of Urubici.

It’s also possible to hike to Pedra Furada, which is an 8,5 km round trip that takes around 5 hours. Moreover, you have to hire a guide and schedule your hike, as well as your visit to Morro da Igreja. More on this a bit later…

Due to its height, the park is windy and cold, even during the summer. During winter, it can be snowy. This peak registered the lowest temperature in Brazil, -17.8 °C, in 1996. So make sure to bring an extra pullover or jacket. And open the car door gently and hold it strong! I’m not kidding. The wind was that strong 😀

It’s only allowed to stay 15 minutes at the viewpoint. No one was checking it, so don’t worry too much 😛

How to schedule your visit to Morro da Igreja?

You must register before visiting Morro da Igreja. On the ICMBio website, you can select your visit’s date and time (morning or afternoon). The booking window is 6 days. You can pick up your ticket at ICMBio office in Urubici from 2 days before your visit (opening time: 8 am – 12 pm and 2 pm – 4 pm).

The site is Portuguese, though it totally works with Google Translator. You’ll also get a confirmation email with all the details.

How to get to Morro da Igreja?

Before going to the viewpoint, take your ticket at ICMBio office in Urubici’s centre. You’re not allowed to enter the property without the registration and ticket!

There’s a paved road from the entrance, not the highest quality, but so much better than a dirt road. Then just follow the road, and after a 15 minutes drive, you’ll reach the viewpoint.

Altos do Corvo Branco

Altos do Corvo Branco is more than a viewpoint. It’s many viewpoints! To be precise, it’s 5 viewpoints, including 2 with glass surfaces, infinity swings overlooking the mountains and a café. But let’s start at the beginning…

Before reaching Altos do Corvo Branco, you’ll arrive at Serra do Corvo Branco, a road connecting the municipalities of Urubici and Grão-Pará. It’s curvy and narrow, so it’s considered dangerous. In July, it was closed for traffic because of heavy rainfalls in May 2022. The road’s most famous point, called the “throat”, is located there, with its 90 m tall cut in the sandstone rocks. Wander to the end of the rocks to see the curvy Serra do Corvo Branco on the mountainside.

After Serra do Corvo Branco, drive up to Altos do Corvo Branco. All the viewpoints are well marked.

First, we headed to “Mirante 1”. The glass viewpoint was only a few minutes walk from the parking. It overlooked Canoas river valley, Serra do Corvo Branco and the 2nd viewpoint. The landscape was so diverse and beautiful. I wanted to observe every detail in the distance, but it was busy because of the Instagrammabble glass surface and the panorama. We got there around 3:30 pm and had another 4 lookouts to discover before sunset (5:30 pm).

Then we walked to “Mirante 2”, the other glass viewpoint, South America’s longest glass corridor without suspension. This is the most scenic point and is seen in most photos. Aaaaand there was a long queue… Unfortunately, it didn’t get shorter after a few minutes, so we decided to visit the other viewpoints. We hurried to the coffee shop to catch the bus going to Mirante 3, 4 and 5.

On the way, we stopped at the infinity swings overlooking Morro da Igreja and Morro da Pirâmide, the pyramid-shaped mountain. Be careful, the swings aren’t that stable, and their surface is slippery. My boyfriend Jackson fell off during intense swinging, so sit still!

After the excitement, we reached the café and had to wait around 10-15 minutes for the next bus. The bus leaves every 15-20 minutes. First, it transported us to “Mirante 5”, the farthest viewpoint. The panorama of Morro da Pirâmide, Morro da Igreja and the other mountains was magnificent. I can’t even describe the beauty… On our left, the mountain view changed to a flatter landscape; on clear days, even the coast is visible from here.

From there, we walked back a few metres to “Mirante 4”, which offered a similar view. Both lookouts have swings, of course 🙂 Instagram needs swing content 😛

We had around 15 minutes for these 2 viewpoints, and then the bus returned to bring us back to the café. On the way, it stopped at the starting point of “Mirante 3”, only a few meters from the café. “Mirante 3” required a little 85 m hiking on a steep hillside, though the view compensated us. From there, you can see Cânion do Espraiado.

It was already late, and the sun started to go down, but we decided to walk back to “Mirante 2”. The crowd was gone, and for a minute, we were the only ones there with the orange sunset and the pinkish glow on the horizon. It was magical…

When to visit Altos do Corvo Branco?

I’d suggest visiting all lookouts because they offer different panoramas and all of them were magnificent. More than magnificent! Depending on the crowd and the photo time, count min. 2 hours!

We arrived after 3 pm and rushed to see everything before sunset. Waiting for others to take photos and taking our own photos took a lot of time. Sometimes it was hard to be present and enjoy the moment.

Avoid our mistakes, arrive earlier than 3 pm and count extra time!

For the best visibility, go there around noon, when the shadows are the smallest, and everything is sharper and brighter. After 3 pm, the shadows were harsh, and the panorama wasn’t perfect. Though on the sunny side, the light was amazing. And I can’t complain because we had a magical sunset experience.

So it’s up to your preferences…

How to get to Altos do Corvo Branco?

First, you’ll have to reach Serra do Corvo Branco, located 30 km from Urubici. For 20 km, the road is paved, though the last 10 km was a bit painful, the dirt road is in bad condition.

Buy your ticket in the container at Serra do Corvo Branco. You’ll get a wristband and glass protection covers for your shoes (and the glass viewpoints). Approach the top and the parking area on the steep road, and then it’s time to discover the panorama.

Pro tip!

Have cash! Their machine doesn’t have service all the time. First, we couldn’t visit the viewpoints because we didn’t have enough cash… So we went back another time. Of course, the machine was working that day, so we didn’t need the money 🙂
