Here are the best whiskey tours in Dublin, Ireland

Jameson Distillery Bow St.

As the most famous Irish whiskey, Jameson needs no introduction. It draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The Jameson family and distillery story is exceptionally extended. It started in 1780, though I’ll spare you the intricate details of rising, wars, tax and the “Barrel man”.

Once housed within the Smithfield complex, Jameson now operates from Midleton, County Cork, producing 60 million bottles annually. At Jameson Bow Street, you can learn more about whiskey-making and the story behind this iconic spirit.

Weekends tend to get busy, so booking ahead online is your best bet to avoid long waits. Pro tip: The bar awaits just beyond the entrance so that you can have some pre-tasting 😛 Take a moment to adore the stunning chandeliers assembled from iconic green Jameson bottles.

Before the tour, you can also get familiar with the family legacy at the meeting point. Our guide, Keiran, masterfully balanced entertainment and education, setting the stage for an incredible experience.

The journey unfolds across three immersive rooms, each revealing a different facet of Jameson’s heritage. From the familial roots in the first room to the details of whiskey-making in the second, every step offers insight into the craftsmanship behind the brand. After a closer look at the key ingredients and ageing process, we entered the 3rd room to sample 3 types of Jameson whiskeys. Okay, only after a short movie about Jameson’s contemporary landscape 😉 Then, we savoured the Original Jameson, the Crested and Black barrel types. All of them were smooth thanks to the triple distillation, though my fav was the Black barrel type because of its smokey taste.

Before you leave, don’t forget to browse in the shop the extensive selection of Jameson whiskeys and flavoured variants like cold brew, IPA, and orange-infused. Moreover, there are other brands like Midleton and Redbreast.

As the last step of the tour, enjoy a drink in the bar. You can choose between a Single malt and whiskey cocktails. I went for the orange cocktail, though it tasted like lemonade…

We’re talking about Jameson, having the World’s leading distillery tours, so obviously the tour was amazing. Though it was too touristy for me, especially with the busy bar. It wasn’t my best whiskey experience ever, though if you’re a Jameson fan, it’s an experience not to be missed. Jameson never fails to impress, whether it’s the flagship tour or one of their other offerings.

Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Teeling Whiskey Distillery opened its doors in 2015 and stands proudly in Liberties, Dublin’s renowned “whiskey district.” They prepare whiskey in an unconventional way, mixing traditional and unusual techniques.

Tours start every 20 minutes. While awaiting the next tour, you can hang out at the stylish Phoenix café adjacent to the entrance, indulging in locally sourced artisanal food and treats.

All tours are fully guided and include whiskey tasting. The tickets available vary depending on how many whiskeys you wish to try. We’re not whiskey fanatics, so we opted for the “Teeling Tasting Tour, ” including a Teeling Small Batch and seasonal whiskey cocktail tasting.

During the tour, Seline, our kind and hilarious guide, provided some interesting information, from a brief historical overview to witnessing the whiskey-making process firsthand. As the distillery is fully operational, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the ingredients and machinery up close, including the fascinating distilling machines.

We could also see different barrels and the colour of the ageing whiskey, which was an incredible experience with the colourful glasses and barrels. Seline also mentioned the Angel’s share phrase, but I won’t give it away here 😛

The factory’s design was impressive and added to the overall ambience of the tour. The tour concluded with a whiskey tasting, where we sampled a Teeling Small Batch and a seasonal cocktail. While the whiskey was too strong for me, the cocktail was delicious, and we had to guess the ingredients. We decided to try a few more cocktails at The Bang Bang Bar, including Teeling whiskey sour, Irish maid, and Caramel cold brew. All of them were very flavorful, but my favourite was the Irish Maid because of its sour and refreshing cucumber taste.

Overall, it was an excellent experience, and I particularly enjoyed Seline’s style, as she humorously provided historical information. While whiskey may not be my favourite drink, it was an excellent opportunity to learn something new and test new flavours. And the whiskey cocktails at The Bang Bang Bar were fantastic.

Roe & Co Distillery

Located in the heart of Liberties, Dublin 8, Roe & Co Distillery is a must-visit for whiskey lovers.

As you enter the distillery premises, you’ll be struck by its impressive garden area and the dominant building. A vibrant, colourful mural showcases the neighbourhood and the distillery, while the large window provides a sneak peek into the inner workings of the distillery.

We arrived 15 minutes earlier than our booked tour, which allowed us to explore the reception area and the shop. We were impressed by the wide range of whiskeys, Roe & Co merchandise, and cocktail accessories on display. The shop is definitely not your average souvenir store and had a festive vibe, with the Christmas decorations perfectly matching the distillery’s design.

Our tour guide, Luke, was friendly and knowledgeable, and he took us through the distillery’s history before leading us through the whiskey-making process. While the machines were loud, the glass bridge provided an excellent view of the multi-level machines, and we were fascinated by the entire system.

The tour’s highlight was undoubtedly the cocktail workshop, where we were each given a kit containing an apron, a shaker set, and a magical box containing our Roe & Co 106 signature whiskey and the “flavours.” We could test the whiskey and the five primary flavours, ranging from sweet to umami. After selecting our favourite, we all made our whiskey cocktails. Although we were a little disappointed that we didn’t have more time to experiment with other ingredients, we appreciated Luke’s insider tips on cocktail-making and managing the shaker.

After the workshop, we headed to the Power House Bar, where we enjoyed seasonal cocktails prepared by the professionals 😀 The cocktails were delicious, and we couldn’t resist trying a few more, including the Bello and Espresso Marina.

The attention to detail at Roe & Co Distillery is impressive, from the ticket and cocktail spoon design to the drink menu and apron. I just want to say wooooow to the brand designer. The colours, design, artistic motifs, everything! Everything is well-designed. We highly recommend this memorable experience to anyone visiting Dublin.

Pearse Lyons Distillery

If you’re looking for a unique whiskey experience in Dublin, look no further than Pearse Lyons Distillery in Liberties. The former St. James’s Church has been transformed into a modern distillery, preserving the church’s stunning architecture and heritage. The distillery opened its doors in 2017 after a lengthy renovation. Named after Dr Pearse Lyons, the founder and innovator of the distillery, Pearse Lyons Distillery offers a range of tours and tastings, each providing an insight into the distillation process.

We went for the “Trilogy Tour”, which included three tastings. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a tasting and a short film showcasing the distillery’s history. Our guide, Finn, was knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about the church’s renovation. As the official Camino starting point in Ireland, you’ll also find the shell motif throughout the distillery.

If you were wondering, the church is not a museum, it’s the actual distillery. The renovated interior is breathtaking with its stainless steel windows, chandeliers, and wooden roof structure. The modern machines blend in with the historical setting. While the machines operate during weekdays, the distillery was calm and quiet during our weekend visit. Only one barrel of whiskey is produced a week, making each drop all the more special.

Throughout the tour, we learned about the whiskey-making process and could smell the ingredients and the different stages of whiskey production, from the 70% alcohol to the 3-year distilled liquids. This was the only distillery to offer smelling all the whiskey stages, making it all the more memorable.

The tasting was the perfect end to the tour. We started with two whiskeys and finished with a gin. All of them were flavourful and had very different tastes. The on-site shop offers a wide selection of whiskeys and gins, as well as books, fun socks, and other souvenirs.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Pearse Lyons Distillery. While it wasn’t my favourite whiskey tour in Dublin, it was a unique and informative experience I’d highly recommend. The church location makes this distillery stand out, and the tastings are the perfect way to end the tour.

You might have a guess which was my favourite Dublin whiskey tour… Yep, Roe & Co Distillery stood out as a personal favourite, capturing my heart with its engaging cocktail workshop and overall immersive atmosphere.
